Why Were Cottonelle Flushable Wipes Recalled?

According to a voluntary recall, certain lots of products have been contaminated by the bacteria pluralibacter gergoviae. All recalled products have been manufactured between February 7th, 2020 and September 14th, 2020, meaning that any purchases made during and shortly after that time could be affected.

ABOUT THE PRODUCT:

Cottonelle® Flushable Wipes products are personal cleansing wipes advertised as flushable, plastic-free, alcohol-free wet wipes that immediately start to break down after flushing. According to the manufacturer, Kimberly-Clark, they are sewer-safe and septic-safe and are made with plant-based fibers.

Which Cottonelle Products Were Recalled?

Kimberly-Clark has identified two products in its recall:

  • Cottonelle® Flushable Wipes
  • Cottonelle® GentlePlus Flushable Wipes

What is Pluralibacter Gergoviae?

Pluralibacter gergoviae is a naturally occurring yet resilient strain of bacteria. In most exposure incidents, people experience no or mild infection symptoms, such as irritation around the exposed skin. Kimberly-Clark has stated that it has only received complaints of such mild symptoms from Cottonelle Flushable Wipes users, which prompted the internal investigation and eventual recall.

Injuries may include, but are not limited to:

  • UTI
  • Irritation, rash, infections
  • Abscesses
  • Fistulas
  • Possible gastrointestinal issues

Cottonelle Recall Risks

Pluralibacter gergoviae is certainly not harmless. In some people, it can cause a serious infection with severe symptoms, such as nausea, persistent fever, respiratory complications, and even bleeding.

Risk of a severe bacterial infection increase due to:
