Johnson & Johnson Talcum Powder Lawsuits
Talcum powder is a widely used household substance with many different purposes. One of the most common uses is as a feminine hygiene product. Unfortunately, the use of Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder has been linked to ovarian cancer through studies that found talc in the ovaries of cancer patients. Despite this connection, talcum powder lacks any cautionary messages concerning the potential risks of usage.
Golomb Legal is currently representing nearly 1,000 women in State and Federal Courts diagnosed with ovarian cancer from perineal use of talcum powder. We served as Co-Counsel in the New Jersey State Court litigation and as Executive Committee Member in the Federal Court Multi-District Litigation. Request a free case evaluation today!
The Link Between Baby Powder and Ovarian Cancer
The mineral talc, the main component of talcum powder, consists of magnesium, silicon, and oxygen — but talc can sometimes have carcinogenic asbestos in it as well. Talcum powder, when used as a feminine hygiene product, can enter the body and stay in the ovaries. From within the body, the long-term presence of talc can result in discomfort and inflammation. In worst-case-scenarios, talc particles in the ovaries can cause the development of cancer. The link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer has been discovered in cases of both asbestos-containing and non-asbestos-containing powders.
No Warning of the Risks Associated with Talcum Powder
The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified the use of talcum powder in the female genital area as “possibly carcinogenic.” Although this classification and various studies have identified a connection between the use of talc-based powder and ovarian cancer, Johnson & Johnson does not label their products with a warning of the potential risks.
A July 2018 case resulted in Johnson & Johnson paying $4.69 billion to women who sued the company based on the accusation that their products had caused ovarian cancer. The Missouri circuit court awarded damages to 22 women based on Johnson & Johnson’s lack of warnings concerning the potential cancerous effects of the use of their body powders.
