Popular Deodorant Brands Recalled for Benzene Cancer Risks

Multiple popular deodorant brands have been targeted by a voluntary recall from Procter & Gamble Co. According to the company, some of its Old Spice® and Secret® brand deodorants could contain benzene, which is a known carcinogen. Although, the manufacturer was careful to note that the benzene levels should be too low to cause cancer and that it had not heard from any consumers who had linked their cancer to the use of those deodorants.

Deodorant products that have been recalled due to possible benzene dangers include:

  • Old Spice Below Deck Powder Spray Fresh Air
  • Old Spice Below Deck Powder Spray Unscented
  • Old Spice Hardest Working Collection Invisible Spray Pure Sport Plus
  • Old Spice Hardest Working Collection Invisible Spray Stronger Swagger
  • Old Spice Hardest Working Collection Invisible Spray Stronger Swagger
  • Old Spice Hardest Working Collection Invisible Spray Ultimate Captain
  • Old Spice High Endurance AP Spray Pure Sport
  • Old Spice Pure Sport 2021 Gift Set
  • Secret Aerosol Powder Fresh
  • Secret Aerosol Powder Fresh
  • Secret Aerosol Powder Fresh Twin Pack
  • Secret Fresh Collection Invisible Spray Lavender
  • Secret Fresh Collection Invisible Spray Light Essentials
  • Secret Fresh Collection Invisible Spray Rose
  • Secret Fresh Collection Invisible Spray Waterlily
  • Secret Outlast Invisible Spray Completely Clean
  • Secret Outlast Invisible Spray Protecting Powder

Specifically, any products in this list with an expiration date before September 2023 are recalled. Future lots are expected to not contain benzene due to improved manufacturing procedures.

Proctor & Gamble is asking consumers to immediately discontinue the use of the affected products and discard them by following instructions on the product packaging. You can call 888-339-7689 to reach the corporation’s recall hotline and request a full refund.

Can P&G Be Sued for Unsafe Deodorant Products?

Investigations into how the deodorant products became contaminated with benzene will need to be conducted and completed before talks about consumer class actions can develop much. Depending on the outcome of those investigations, it could be negligence that caused the contamination. If so, P&G could be liable and answer to claims and lawsuits.

It is worth noting that people who can join a consumer class action for such a recall often don’t need to suffer any sort of injury or illness due to a defective or dangerous product. Simply buying a product and being put at potential risk of harm can be enough to warrant legal action.
